2024 Elementary Horse of the Year - Equestrian Gold Coast Club - with adult rider
Introduction: Sparty is a true gentleman. An athletic, scopey, forward and super brave pony who knows his job and absolutely loves jumping. He is highly competitive in both interschool, pony club and open shows - frequently winning trophies, rugs and broad ribbons.
Sparty is suitable for a confident and capable child rider through to a teen or adult looking for a highly competitive and fuss free small performance horse.
Conformation: Sparty is a beautifully put together example of his Welsh D ancestry. He is elegant, with a pretty head and, while not as chunky as some, he is able to carry a rider of average height.
Education, riding and experience: Sparty was started by his rider’s mother and competed to elementary level. His current rider then took over and has competed him to EVA95 and 90cm showjumping. Sparty has competed at multiple major venues and is very well exposed to different environments.
Sparty has competed at Novice level with his junior rider - scoring up to 64% in straight dressage and 68% in eventing dressage. He has elementary movements established – walk- canter, leg yield, shoulder-in, travers and counter-canter. He is described as being soft and 'light' in the bridle, he easily 'collects’ and is willing and responsive.
Sparty is sharp and responsive to jump. He is established and confident up to EVA80 and 90cm SJ - honest, a clear round machine and a ‘take you to the jump’ type. At EVA95 and 100-110 showjumping he is careful and scopey, so he requires a capable rider to support him.

Sparty is currently in work 3 days a week. He doesn’t need regular riding and is safe after a spell. Sparty doesn’t need lunging before riding or any work down at shows.
Sparty is not concerned by farm life - tractors, trucks, motorbikes and livestock. He is not worried by dogs or other pets. Sparty is used to the nonsense of children around him. Sparty has visited the beach and enjoys being ridden bareback, on trails and around the farm.
Handling: Sparty is easy to catch, lead and handle - for farrier, picking out feet, grooming, hosing and washing. He would prefer his head sponged rather than hosed, in fairness, so do the majority of horses. He ties up happily and calmly at the float and stables without fuss or pulling back, even when his companion walks off. Sparty is easy and calm to float and clip.
Behaviour: Sparty is 100% safe and vice free. However, he can become tense and looky if the rider is nervous and he is described as forward and sharp. Sparty is safe for novices under instruction but is not a small child’s or beginner’s plodder and won’t be sold as one!
Sparty is always 100% safe to handle - catch, groom, saddle, wash, float. He is great for the farrier and vet. Sparty is sensitive with one ear and likes to be bridled from right to left.
Medical: Sparty does not have any medical concerns or issues. He is completely sound and any vet check or test is welcome.
Rider Suitability: Sparty is suitable for an intermediate rider - defined as someone who has been riding / competing regularly for at least three years, has independent hands and balanced position/ seat; can walk, trot and canter on their own horse. The rider is confident if the horse is reasonably well behaved. Prefers a schoolmaster type without any major quirks.
Sparty is safe for novices under instruction but will not be sold to a novice or beginner. This is a serious performance horse who loves his job and deserves to continue doing it.
Sparty suits a keen junior to compete EVA80-95 or a small adult with 1* aspirations.
Reason for sale: Sparty is very sadly for sale as his rider has moved on to bigger horses. His family will miss Sparty dearly but know that, at only 9 years old, he is wasted sitting in the paddock.
